Since graduating in 1998, from the Rhode Island School of Design, Margaret C. Hanscom has been pursuing her life long interest in fine arts through the exploration of egg tempera painting and gilding.

Egg tempera is one of the oldest and most enduring painting mediums. It is made by combining ground pigments with egg yolk. This medium was commonly used in medieval manuscript illuminations and early religious iconography, though its signature luminosity and vibrancy of color are most notably recognized in the works of the early Renaissance.

While western medieval imagery and pattern are an inspiration for her work, other influences include Asian art forms in which nature is the prevailing theme.

The subtle interplay of light, color and detail that is evident in all natural subjects is of endless fascination and inspiration for Margaret. Her work explores this interest and reverence for the natural world. Through her use of the idiom of gold leaf and egg tempera she seeks to impart an iconic symbolism to her subjects.
